Youth sports league and club insurance in Florida

Leagues and clubs run on volunteers, public fields and parents' trust. Soretta helps Florida youth sports organizations work out what to insure, what their fields and sponsors require, and what to ask before they buy.

What a youth sports organization usually needs

  • General liability. Responds when the organization is legally responsible for injury to a spectator or a participant, or for damage to someone else’s property, and pays for legal defense. Check who counts as an insured: the organization, its board, coaches and volunteers.
  • Participant accident medical. Helps pay medical bills for injured players regardless of fault. Many leagues rely on it for everyday injuries, and it often works as a supplement to a family’s own health insurance.
  • Abuse and molestation coverage. A priority for any organization that works with children. It is often excluded from general liability or limited, so ask about it directly.
  • Directors and officers liability. Protects the volunteer board against claims about decisions such as eligibility, team placement, discipline and finances.
  • Property. Equipment, uniforms, concession stands and storage, including what is kept at someone’s home or in a shed.
  • Hired and non-owned auto. Covers the organization’s liability when staff or volunteers drive their own vehicles on league business. It generally sits behind the driver’s own insurance.
  • Crime or fidelity coverage. For money handled by treasurers, registrars and concession volunteers.
  • Event and tournament coverage. For one-time events, tournaments, fundraisers and camps.
  • Workers’ compensation. If you have paid staff. See our workers’ compensation guide for when Florida requires it.

Fields, parks and facility agreements

Cities, counties, school districts and private landlords commonly ask for a certificate of insurance before they let you use a field or a gym. The certificate usually has to show a stated amount of general liability coverage and name the facility owner as an additional insured. Send us the permit or agreement and we will tell you exactly what it asks for. A certificate is evidence of coverage, and it does not change the policy.

Coach screening and Florida law

Section 943.0438 of the Florida Statutes requires an independent sanctioning authority for youth athletic teams to run background screening on each current and prospective athletic coach before the person coaches, and the 2026 text requires a Level 2 screening and registration with the state’s background screening clearinghouse. The statute was amended as recently as 2026, so confirm with your attorney whether your organization is an independent sanctioning authority and exactly what applies. Insurers also ask what screening you do, whether or not a law requires it, and a well-documented process helps when you apply for abuse and molestation coverage.

Volunteers, coaches and board members

  • Check whether volunteers are covered as insureds under the policy. The definition varies from one policy to the next.
  • Tell the insurer how many teams, players and ages you have, and what sports you run. Contact sports are rated differently from non-contact sports.
  • Ask what happens when a coach or volunteer is accused of something. Defense costs for the person and the organization are one of the first things that matter.

Seasons, tournaments and travel

Tell the insurer about tournaments, travel teams, camps and overnight trips, and about who drives. Events and travel are the usual places where coverage questions arise, and it is much easier to settle them before the season than during it.

What to have ready

  • The sports you run, the number of teams and players, and the age groups.
  • Whether the sports involve contact, and what protective equipment is required.
  • The fields and facilities you use, and what their permits or agreements require.
  • Events, tournaments, camps and travel for the coming year.
  • Your board, your paid staff if any, and your volunteer screening process.
  • Equipment values, current policies and expiration dates, and claims history.

You do not need everything to start. Tell us about your league or club and we will ask for the rest.

Questions

Questions from youth sports organizations

Does our league need insurance if we use a public park?

Often, yes. Parks departments and school districts commonly require a certificate of insurance, with stated limits and the owner named as an additional insured, before they issue a permit. Send us the permit requirements and we will tell you what to ask for.

Are volunteer coaches covered?

It depends on how the policy defines an insured. Some policies cover volunteers acting for the organization and some limit that coverage. Ask, and tell us who coaches and drives for you.

What is participant accident insurance?

It pays medical bills for injured players regardless of who was at fault, usually up to a limit and often after the family’s own health insurance. It is different from liability coverage, which responds only when the organization is legally responsible.

Does a volunteer board need directors and officers coverage?

Volunteer boards can face claims about decisions they make, such as eligibility, discipline and how money is handled. Directors and officers liability responds to those claims. Whether you need it depends on your size and activities.

Who is responsible for coach background checks?

Florida law places the screening duty on the independent sanctioning authority, and the 2026 statute says it cannot be delegated to individual teams. Ask your attorney what applies to you, and tell us about your process, because insurers often ask.

Can you help a club that runs several sports?

Yes. Tell us each sport, the age groups and how much contact is involved. Different sports can be rated differently, and we will tell you plainly what we can and cannot place.
